Nicodemus! what a character. at our Bible Study this week, i asked folks what they thought of him. one said, "he had doubts. i have doubts sometime too, so i appreciate knowing that it's OK." another said, "he wanted to believe! it just took him some time." finally, a third perspective emerged: "he may have believed eventually, but this was a test. he went to see Jesus on a fact-finding mission."
i plan to draw in each of these commonly-held perspectives to portray Nicodemus as a man who is learning to wear his skin. this draws on the language of Barbara Brown Taylor and her "practices" of faith.
