Ben Witherington has an interesting sermon which i've found helpful: http://benwitherington.blogspot.com/2008/02/mortality-and-immorality-sermon-for-ash.html
i'm focusing on the meaning of "repentance"--about face or turn around. receiving the ashes as the first step in a process of turning around to God on the Lenten journey.
also, Barbara Brown Taylor talks about the imposition of ashes being an invitation to our own funeral. drawing on ecclesiastes 3 (a time to be born, a time to die), i open with this thought--that we are invited to see our own mortality upclose and thereby begin "turning around."
